In 2018, the Golden State grew by 186,807 people, according to data released by the state last week. That represents the represents the slowest growth in the state’s entire history, a meager 0.47 percent increase over the year before. Thursday, Tina Daley, who heads demographic research for the state’s department of finance,  said the slow growth wasn’t surprising. Some are moving out of state.

Moving out of state ranks as one of the most stressful things to do.  Moving is a daunting task for everyone, but moving out of state can be even harder. Getting overwhelmed by the details happens to the best of us. Read on for five helpful tips on moving out of state

Create a Moving Budget

Moving costs may seem straightforward, but the costs can rack up pretty quickly. Of course, you’ll want to factor in hiring movers or moving van rentals and gas. Beyond that, you’ll want to add in costs of the little things. Think about moving boxes, packing tape, cleaning supplies, and eating out (you are not likely to cook when you have packed up your kitchen.

Purge Your Clutter

Packing up your whole home is the perfect excuse to get rid of stuff! Minimize your belongings by asking yourself, “Have I used this item in the last year?” If the answer is yes, pack it away! If not, keep extra boxes marked for charity shops and toss it in there. Just remember, the less you pack, the less you have to unpack later.

Change Your Address

The timing of changing your address is key. Too soon or too late and you’ll miss out on important details like paying bills on time. Instead, take time to estimate the date you’ll be in your new home and give that to the post office. Don’t forget to fill out forms to forward mail, which the postal service will do for you up to a year. Finally, cancel any subscriptions to your old home or transfer those subscriptions to your new home.

Get Your New Home Ready

You’ll want to have your new home ready to receive you in the best condition. So make sure to set up all your necessary utilities like electricity, water, wifi, and heat. Unpacking and starting life in your new state will be a monstrous task all its own, so take care of your basic needs and leave unnecessary stress behind.
